Qf8? And black will lose the rook or be checkmated…
1.Qb5+ Kd8
2.Qb6 on any neutral move white intends 3.Qd6+ Ke8 (3…. Kd7 4.Qb8#)4.Qxc7 mating next move.Black must find immediate offensive move.
2….. Qf3 intending after 4.Qxc7 by white in the above variation 4…. Qxd1+ 5.Ka2 Nc1+ with aperpetual.
3.Rc1! Qf4 3… Nxc1 can not stop white’s plan
4.Qd6+ Ke8 5.Qxc7 Qxc1+ 6.Ka2 Qa1+ 7.Kxb3
Alternative 2… Qxe5 3.Nc6+ Kd7 4.Nxe5+ Kc8 5.cxb3 g3 6.Rc2 Rxc2 7.Kxc2 h2 8.Qc6+ Kb8 9.Nd7+ Ka7 10.Qb6+ Ka8 11.Qb8#
1. Qb5+ forces Kd8, then 2. Q:b3 wins a piece since R:a7 is met by 3. Qb8+. But that does nothing about the g and h pawns.
Better is 2. Qb6. This will lead to mate – Threats are:
3. Qd6+ Rd7 4. Qb8#
3. Qd6+ Ke8 4. Q:c7 with unstoppable mate threats.
Finally, if 2…Q:e5 3. Nc6+ wins the Q without materially helping Black avoid mate.
To Jorge and David:
1. Qf8 was an interesting plan that actually may win a rook. But alas it also drops the white e and f pawns. Or it may keep the pawns but just win a quality.
You may have forgotten to think about how to stop black’s overwhelming pawns.
The black pawns are unstoppable and black wins in spite of being down with a rook!
I think the only idea to win this game is Qb5+ followed by Qb6 leading to mate.
This plan is difficult to find and I should not have found it over the board.
Over the board, I should have settled with a draw by repetition: Qb5+ Kd8 Qb8+ Kd7 Qb5+ Kd8 Qb8+.
