Webster University’s chess team has won the national collegiate chess championship.
The team prevailed the final four of chess in a final match today with the University of Texas-Dallas to win what’s known as the President’s Cup.
The other schools competing in the final four were from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and the University of Illinois.
The competition took place this weekend in Rockville, Md.
At today’s awards ceremony at the competition, Webster coach Susan Polgar was named the College chess coach of the year. This is the third team in a row that Polgar has coached to a President’s Cup victory. Before joining Webster, Polgar was the coach for Texas Tech’s chess team, which won in 2011 and 2012.
Webster University has planned a victory reception for the team at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Marletto’s cafeteria at the main campus, 470 East Lockwood Avenue.
