Suppose Karpov wins. Won’t that spur Kasparov to play more tournament chess? I don’t think he will want his last competitive chess to consist of a loss to Karpov.
This match is not “competitive chess”. It’s an exhibition.
Kasparov’s last competitive game was in Linares 2005 (lost to Topalov).
Where he became shared tournament winner! He would only allow a shared first place at tournaments during his reign, if he didn’t win them by considerable margins.
