The Deutsche Schule Kapstadt is this year’s proud host of the international chess tournament – “DSK International Chess Open 2013” which runs from the 19-29 July.
Almost 400 participants took part in this prestigious event and we were particularly happy about the great attendance of children from neighbouring schools and our Outreach partner school in Langa: Thembani Primary School.
Congratulations to the winners of the Junior event Enzo Bergmann, Nathan Amato and Mohammad Abrahams for achieving first, second and third place respectively!
Besides the Junior, Open and Prestige tournaments, the DSK hosts the first ever Grandmaster event in South Africa. Six Grandmasters from all over the world, including Youth World Champion GM Alexander Ipatov from Turkey, will compete for the trophy until 29 July.
Chess has been implemented as a compulsory subject at the DSK primary school as of this year and the school is proud to be celebrating an important milestone as hosts of the 2013 Chess Open. The positive correlation between playing chess and the academic achievements of learners has been scientifically proven many times. It is for this reason that the development of chess is widely supported by government and Dr. Ivan Meyer (Cultural and Sports minister of the Western Cape) suggested that chess should be a compulsory subject at every school in South Africa! A goal the DSK has already accomplished.
Our very own international master, Watu Kobese is teaching at the DSK and is one of the highest ranked players in South African.
The DSK is proud to play an important role in the development of chess throughout schools in the Western Cape.
