That’s Women’s Chess World Champion Elizaveta Bykova (or alternative spellings: Elisabeth Bykova, or Elisabeth Bikova, or Elisaveta Bykova). She was born on November 4, 1913 in Bogolyubovo, Russia and died on March 8, 1989 in Moscow). She was also an author and columnist about chess in the USSR. The 5th Elizaveta Bykova Memorial tournament was held last year.
Here’s a list of Women’s Chess World Champions including our fine blog host Susan:
Vera Menchik 1927–1944 Lyudmila Rudenko 1950–1953 Elisabeth Bykova 1953–1956 Olga Rubtsova 1956–1958 Elisabeth Bykova 1958–1962 Nona Gaprindashvili 1962–1978 Maya Chiburdanidze 1978–1991 Xie Jun 1991–1996 Susan Polgar 1996–1999 Xie Jun 1999–2001 Zhu Chen 2001–2004 Antoaneta Stefanova 2004–2006 Xu Yuhua 2006–present
(Note: Susan never lost her title over the board.)
Why do they still let Jerry Hanken write anything? His columns are terrible! 2200 riding the rating floor loses to 4 year old rated 800, includes his picture again this month, then this genius annotates the loss as poorly as he played it. WHY?!?!!?!?!
Possibly Vera Menchik. While I don’t see a strong resemblance to her, I can’t think of another female player from that era that it might be.

Why difficult?? It was easier than your puzzles.
Yeah, that’s Bykova. That’s a semi-well known picture of her.
