White is a piece up and safeguards it by 1.Bg4. 1… NxB is taboo because of threatened smother mate.

I have always thought there should be more puzzles like this than there are- puzzles that require the solver to think a bit more broadly than looking for quick tactics to win material or mate an opponent. This puzzle requires one to consider the possibility of simply maintaining an edge. I have to admit, I spent my first few minutes trying to spend white’s advantage in various sacrifices for mate or even greater material advantage- only when failing did I finally remember that, hey, maybe white should just try to consolidate.
