I often dislike puzzles being posted so frequently, but this was a great puzzle from last July. If memory serves, I think Prof.S.H Bhat was the only one to post the correct solution with detail, at least that is what my notes tell me.
After staring at this for a while, I finally concluded that flopping a piece onto the c-file to obstruct the R was the only chance.
More brain cells were expended analyzing 1…Bc3 2. bc (2. R:c3 f1Q+ is devastating) but it seems that White can make a nuisance of himself due to the exposed position of Black’s K.
So the (at first glance ridiculous) shot of 1…Qc4 was the next idea. Voila! The Q supports 2…f1Q+, and 2. R:c4 f1Q+ recovers the lost Q, leaving Black a piece up with an attack and a pawn about to promote.
I refrained from commenting this time as I had already done it before. This time I recognized instantly 1…. Qc4.If 2.Qa8+ kf7 (avoiding 2… kg7 3.h6+)3.Qa7+ or Qb7+ Bc7. I do not keep any notes or record.I think it is a good idea to store Forsyth’s notation of the problem on excel sheet with date in adjacent cell as Forsyth’s notation can be sorted to find previous occrence of the problem.
I figured…
1… Qf1 (promotion – P – Q)
2. Rxf1 g2
3. Rg1 Qh3 / Bh2
Apart from that, I’m stumped.
Qf7
After back rank check – K escapes to g7
if QxQ+ KxQf7
and W wont be able to stop the promotion
