Excerpt from “Chess Lessons I Learned From The Berkeley Coffee House Patzers” by Lucy Lasker
When you have been outforked, the question alway arises: Which rook do you sacrifice to win the game? Well, the most devious one, naturally.
Don’t sacrifice the straight-forward rook. You will regret it:
1. Rxg6+? Nope. This is the straight rook, silly. Kxg6
But you may get lucky: (1. .. fxg6?? 2. Qd7+ Kf6 3. Rf8+ Ke5 4. Re8+ Kf6 5. Qe7#)
2. Rg8+ Kh6 3. Rh8+ Kg7 4. Rh7+ Kxh7 5. Qxf7+ and a perpetual check will be the outcome. You didn’t deserve it.
The devious rook, however, is a rebellious rook, and rivets our attention:
1. Rg8+! Kh6
1. .. Kxg8 2. Rxg6+ Kh8 (2. .. Kh7 3. Qxf7+ Kh8 4. Rg8#) (2. .. Kf8 3. Qd8#) 3. Qd8+ Kh7 4. Qg8#
2. Rh8+ Kg7 3. Rh7+ The devious rook is also most
persistent.
3. ..Kxh7 4. Qxf7+ Kh8 5. Qf6+ Kh7 (5. .. Kg8 6. Rxg6+ Kh7 7. Qg7#) 6. Qxg6+ Kh8 7. Qg7#

Lucymarie,
“Straight Rook” and “Rebellious Rook”. Loved it!
Thanks, Yancey.
