Mr. Lawrence Totaro from Ultimate Chess Collecting just sent me this better picture of Regina Fischer, Bobby’s Mother. This is a better one than the one I posted a few days ago.
I spoke to Regina on the phone but I have never met her. When Bobby was living with my family in Budapest, he put me on the phone to speak to her. She was very kind and she thanked me for hosting Bobby in Budapest.

Susan what did it feel like playing chess with Bobby
I enjoy challenges. Playing against players like Fischer, Spassky, Tal, Karpov, Kasparov, etc. is great.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar

Thank you Susan you are very fortunate to have played with all those great players and you chess work is amazing..best of luck to you…
She protested so much that today Rumsfeld stepped down. Go Regina! he’ll send that team to Germany if its the last thing she does.
Is she still alive ?
She past on around 1997.
Best wishes,

I read that Bobby’s sister Joan also passed and the administrations refusal to drop charges prevented him from being able to attend either funeral which only fueled his fire/bitterness.
Hi Susan. This is actually my first blog in your blogspot. I’m from the Philippines. I first learned about you and your sisters when you were featured in a TIME magazine article way back in 1988 (or 1987, I really cannot recall for sure). After that I learned of Judit’s feat in the Thessaloniki Olympiad (she was only 11 years old, and i think she surpassed the men’s IM norm by 3.5 points, winning all her games except the last, a draw against a Chinese, if my memory still serves me right).
Regarding this picture of Regina Fischer, I’m just curious: when did Bobby Fischer live with you in Budapest? was it during your (or Judit’s)formative years? I notice that Judit’s opening favorites (1.e4 with White, KID with Black) are like Fischer’s. Do you think Bobby Fischer’s visit played a role in this?
No, Bobby had no impact on Judit’s repertoire. She always played 1.e4.
Best wishes,

Susan you are the most well liked GM, the best personality in chess, the most enthusiastic goodwill ambassador for chess in America and the world, and your chess strentgh is amazing around 2700, having very little time to play tournaments. I am glad you are an American citizen!! Being able to sit down with all those great GM’s like Tal, Spassky, Karpov, Kasparov, and Fischer shows how personable, respected, and how well liked you are!
P.S. I am currently taking chess lessons from your sister Sophia and she is very nice and a good teacher!
Is it true that Bobby was estranged from his mother at one time?
Bobby Fisher is the only chess player to take the title from the Russians in a near 100 years… There is something about bringing down it’s national heroes..
Just like General G Patton who won the 2nd world war with his 3rd army (saving millions of lives) and yet not to be received as a national hero…also look what they did to Michael Jackson what terrible persecution to have happen to to him.
Chess in America would today be much stronger with Bobby Fisher to help it along for all those years..who knows he might still have been the champion today…
The price money for a title would be in the Millions..(Even Garry Kasperov said that Fisher brought money to the game)
I for one am very upset for him
i have always felt one needs to separate things; that fischer is a great chess mind, no one can deny.. and, for better or worse, this country gives a precious freedom, freedom of speech.. it has been said the voltaire worte “i may not agree with whay you are saying, but i will defend to the death your right to say it”.. however despicable that speech may be, it is to be protected.. i for one believe fischer was targeted more for his speech than his actions, and that, in the united states whose most beautiful and important contribution to the world, the us constitution (most every country that has one has used it as a template) protects speech, should be unacceptable
What a nice picture of Regina!
Truly a remarkable lady who overcame remarkable obstacles!
Susan,
Did you or any of your sisters benefit from Fischer when he lived with your family?
@hoddy – ‘u are completly wrong…
1. Max Euwe (netherlands)
2. Mikhahil Tal (latvia)
3. Tigran Petrosjan (armenia)
4. Robert Fischer (usa)
5. Garri Weinstein Kasparov (aserbaidschan)
6. Visvanatan Anand (india)
7. Ruslan Ponnomariov (ukraine)
8. Rustam Kasimdzhanov (usbekistan)
9. Vesselin Topalov (bulgaria)
so – calm down – but no down under … hmmm – no all black – i like them – what about a little game of rugby … ^^
no offense meant – yours Vohaul
Mein Lieber Bruder vohaul..
I am talking about real world champions..not FIDE or Classical or Potty ..un so weiter…
I was talking in general about American players that have defeated the Russians. You are right but I don’t recognise all those wishy washy champions and overall he was basically the only one anyway as most of the other champions were playing for communist USSR countries, (except Max Euwe).
Now about that rugby game:
Statistics for Australia vs New Zealand (Rev)
Games played: 126
Games won by Australia:
37 = 29.37%
Games lost by Australia:
84 = 66.67%
Games drawn:
5 = 3.97%
That makes me feel sick, but the Wallabies are a force to be reckoned with! (As are most Aussies bloggers!!).
PS I am impressed with your personal sporting achievements. Gut Gemacht.
To pawntorook4…your comment is extremely impressive I like it a lot..well written
“i may not agree with what you are saying, but i will defend to the death your right to say it”..
that is to good..
In this photo Regina really looks like Bobby.
