Students compete in chess tourney today

A chess competition for K-12 students will be held today at Monterey High School.
The 2nd Annual Lubbock Open Scholastic Chess Championship, sponsored by Texas Tech’s Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence, begins at 11 a.m. On-site registration and check in will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The cost to register is $20.
The championship is a four-round Swiss System Tournament and will be rated by the U.S. Chess Federation.
Games are played in four sections including primary, elementary, middle and high school.
A valid USCF membership is required and can be obtained at www.uschess.org or on the day the day of the event before 10 a.m.
