Of course. It’s from the movie The Seventh Seal directed by the alas now departed Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. Death’s opponent in the film was played by Max von Sydow. You can guess who won.
The film is The Seventh Seal, one of my very favorites.
My sister lived in San Francisco and raised a family about half a block from what was then the Surf Theater on Irving Street near Ocean Beach, a movie house specializing in classic film. When I was San Francisco State University, she would invite me to dinner at her place and I would take in the movie afterwards.
As an interesting coincidence, I first saw The Seventh Seal at the Surf on a day I spent reading Kierkegaard, without knowing how deeply Kierkegaard’s philosophy ran through the film.
