“In general, there is something puzzling about the fact that the most renowned figures in chess – Morphy, Pillsbury, Capablanca and Fischer – were born in America.” ~ Garry Kasparov
One of the greatest American chess players ever, who died young, who attained prominence by winning one of the strongest tournaments of the time, the 1895 Hastings Tournament, finishing ahead of Lasker, Steinitz, Tchigorin, etc., the great Harry Nelson Pillsbury. He should be a household name in America, along with Bobby Fischer, Paul Morphy, Reuben Fine, all born in America, and all chess players of the highest quality.
If Kasparov said that Capablanca was born in America, he was entirely mistaken. Capablanca was Cuban, and born in Havana. He did spend a lot of time in the USA, and did attend Columbia University. But he was definitely NOT American. Maybe Kasparov was thinking geographically of the “Americas”. Or maybe Kasparov is just a Krackpot. (He’s certainly no Kracker.) At least Kasparov didn’t say that Kapablankov was born in the former Soviet Union.
Seems Harry Nelson Pillsbury.
