Here is an actual position between NM Lawton and GM Khachiyan during round 1 of the 2009 U.S. Championship. Black just played 28….Rc5. It is White to move.
The position is somewhat equal. Which side would you prefer to play? Practice this position (from either side) by playing it out against a friend or your own computer.
If an average GM is playing against an average NM from the same position, I suspect that the GM will score probably win 70-80% of the time from either side. If you want to go the next level, this is a perfect type of position to work and improve on.
