IRVINE – Understanding chess is like learning how to think, Dewain Barber says.
Chess can develop your mind by teaching how to plan ahead, and knowing that the decisions you make can often lead to consequences down the road.
For 35 years, Barber has worked to instill that philosophy into young minds, teaching thousands of students the cerebral, age-old game.
“One of the components of life is teaching the mind,” said Barber, 64. “For me, chess provides this opportunity.”
Barber, a retired middle school teacher from Anaheim Hills, has also organized local and national chess tournaments for young people for decades with the goal of bringing more children into the classic game.
