Chess teacher now a fugitive
A Fort Collins chess teacher who also had classes in Greeley before his arrest three years ago for sexually assaulting children has now disappeared and is on the police department’s “Most Wanted” list.
Robert Michael Snyder, 54, taught in Greeley and Fort Collins in his Chess For Juniors program he founded in 1993. He was arrested in September, 2005 for molesting some of his chess students. He was sentenced to 10 years probation, but failed to show up for his registration date in August.
Fort Collins police have placed him on their Top Ten Most Wanted list, and a warrant was issued for his arrest on probation revocation charges.
A Larimer County judge gave him permission to travel to California as long as he was back in Larimer Courts to start his probation. Officials aren’t sure if Snyder is in California at this time.
Although he was never accused of inappropriate contact with any children in Greeley, he taught the chess classes here until he was arrested.
In 1983, Snyder faced similar child sexual assault charges in California, but a jury found him not guilty after a 4-week trial.Anyone with information about Snyder is asked to call (970) 221-6560.

When I was a strong junior player in Southern California, Snyder tried on a couple of occasions to become my chess coach.
I’m very grateful that instinctively I thought I should stay away.
What a sick man. He probably taught the Petroff often and referred to his favorite students as “Vladdy”.
