From that position the mate is not hard to find but it looks as if the combination started some moves before. I think it could be very interesting to see the whole game….
1.Rh7+ Kxh7 only move 2.Nf6+(double check,king must move) Kg7 only move(if Kh8 3.Qh7++) 3.Qh7+ Kxf6 only move 4.Nd7++
I agree with Vohaul. In anycase Susan I think you were lucky in that game,because probably the last black move was to attack one of your knights and you had the trap ready…but if he takes one of them and do not attack the other, I guess you are losing ;-). Smile,You did it well!
In Spain we have a clear expresion for that,I write it for you in spanish: “No ha sido una victoria,ha sido un atraco”. Do not worry I do it many times too :-)),mainly in blitz.
It would effectively be very interesting for me to know the position one or two move before and WHEN the Grandmaster has seen this beautiful pattern (the knight giving mate on d7): Did the opponent just made a “blunder” which gives the mate in four possible or did Susan see the final mate pattern some move before or …?
When I try to solve this problem I almost immediately take into considertation the rook sacrifice (so much easier when you know that there is a mate to find)but it took me quite long to see the final pattern.
Beautiful, there is some aesthetic in this final “knight mating dance”.
my first guess
1.Rh7+
4. Nd7# is very nice.
1. Rh7+! Kxh7 2. Nf6++!
^^ ok ok you wanna see the mate…
1.rh7+ kxh7
2.nf6+ kg7
3.qh7+ kxf6
4.nd7#
