Checkmate in 5 Chess tactic, Puzzle Solving White to move and checkmate in 5. No computer assistance please 🙂7r/4R1r1/5p1k/5Qpp/4B3/p3P1P1/1q1p1PK1/8 w – – 0 1 Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
My guess is 1.Rf7 and now if 1..Rhg8? Qh7+ wins so I dont see anything else, I guess the main line could be 1.Rf7 h4 2.Rf6+ Qxf6 3.Qxf6+ Kh5 4.g4+ Kxg4 and now 5.Qf3+ or 5.Bf3
I would have to agree, Rxf7 and from their all mayhem breaks loose. Let me get my first cup of coffee and I’ll see everything better from then on.
Goodmorning to all.

I first looked at
Rxg7 Kxg7 (anything else allows Qg6 mate)
Qg6 Kf8
Bd4
but I am not sure white has a mate in 2 from that position.

I looked at that too but the King escapes with Ke7
Rf7 is a solution and only h4 if Rhh7? QxRh7! or d1=Q Rxf6+

1.Rxg7 Kxg7
2.QD7! Kf8
3.QD8! Kg7
4.QE7! Kh6
5.QF7
Great puzzle Susan.
I found the mate! 🙂
1.Rf7 h4
2.Rxf6+ Qxf6
3.Qxf6+ Kh4
4.g4+ Kxg4
5.Bf3#
I don’t think I need to explain since I think the moves are pretty much forced because otherwise black falls into mates in 1.
Certainly an interesting puzzle!
