Youth will be well represented on the Canadian teams at the Dresden Chess Olympics in November. Of the 10 players six are students.
From Toronto public schools, Yuanling Yuan, 14, and Hazel Smith, 17, are on the women’s while Nikolay Noritsyn, 17, of Richmond Hill is on the national team.
York University has placed two players: Grandmaster Mark Bluvshtein from the Science and Engineering department and Dina Kagramanov from Health.
Thomas Roussel-Roozmon is an economics student at University of Montreal, but he has played so much chess this year in Europe that it is hard to see him having much study time. From the workforce GM Pascal Charbonneau, originally from Montreal, is now based in New York where he works in electronic brokerage, while Igor Zugic is in software engineering in Toronto.
The health profession is well represented with Natalia Khoudgarian in administration and Irina Barron, a nurse. Bluvshtein will be our top board. He started playing Olympiads in 2002 and this will be his fourth appearance. Regardless of what board he manned, his results have been remarkably consistent and impressive: 8-3 on 5th at Bled 2002; 8.5-3.5 on 3rd at Calvia 2004, and 7.5-3.5 on 2nd at Turin 2006.
