Can White hold this? Breaking News White to move. Can White hold this? What is the best way for White to proceed? Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Ng5+ !?
1. Ng5+
1…Kf6 (otherwise mate) Nh7+
2…Kf7 Ng5+
draw.
White has a forced win: 1.Ng5+ Kf6 2.Re6+ Kf5 3.Qxg6+ Kf4 4.Qf7+ Kxg5 5.Rg6+ Kh4 6.Qe7+ Qe6 7.Qxe6 mate.
But to answer the question: yes, White can hold this.
1. Ng5+ Kf6 (1… Kg8 2. Qh7+ Kf8 3. Qf7#)
2. Re6+ Kf5
3. Qxg6+ Kf4
4. Nf6#
1. Ng5+ Kf6 (1… Kg8 2. Qh7+ Kf8 3. Qf7#)
2. Re6+ Kf5
3. Qxg6+ Kf4
4. Nf6#
(mcenroe voice) YOU CAN NOT BE SERIOUS.
A knight on g5 can not reach f6 in one move.
It can’t reach e6 either because its rook is already there.
Anon, switch on numbering on your board. It’s 6…Qf6 7.Qxf6# not 6…Qe6 7.Qxe6#
1. Ng5+ Kf6 (1… Kg8 2. Qh7+ Kf8 3. Qf7#) 2. Re6+ Kf5 3. Qxg6+ Kf4 4. Qf7+ Kxg5 5. Rg6+ Kh4 6. Qe7+ Qf6 7. Qxf6# 1-0
Not that hard 😀
D.K.
1. Ng5+ Kf6 (… Kg8 2. Qh7+ Kf8 3. Qf7++) 2. Re6+ Kf5 3. Qxc6+ Kf4 4. g3++
white Black
Ng5+ Kf6
Re6+ Kf5
Qxg6+ Kf4
Re4 mate
Why is Re4 mate when the Queen can capture the white rook?
In reaction on my previous post, it should be 3. Qxg6 instead of 3. Qxc6, I mistyped:
1. Ng5+ Kf6 (… Kg8 2. Qh7+ Kf8 3. Qf7++) 2. Re6+ Kf5 3. Qxg6+ Kf4 4. g3++
Why make it difficult when a simple pawn can deliver the mate? 🙂

You’re right, doofus. I always try to solve these problems by just looking at the screen and don’t use a chessboard or an engine. I missed the rook pinning the simple pawn.
