Cuban Bruzon Leads Chess Cup in the DR
Written by ACN
Cuban Lázaro Bruzón has 5.5 points from 6 and he is the sole leader of the AES Chess Cup in the Dominican Republic, where he faces today Venezuelan Eduardo Iturrizaga.
Bruzon has only one draw, an unexpected result against the local Juan Manuel Jaquez, on the second day, and five wins even over renowned international players like Moldovan Nikola Mitkov and Colombian Alonso Zapata, whom have been victims of the Cuban´s overwhelming performance.
Bruzon is the clear favorite to win the contest, which has nine matches using the Swiss system, Zapata ranks second with five points.
Lelys Martinez, another Cuban, ranks third with four units, because he is on top of a seven-member group with the same score, thanks to his best tiebreaker, which is also integrated by Mitkov and Iturrizaga.
The third Cuban in the tournament is Rodney Perez, who is placed eleventh with 3.5, as reported by www.chess-results.com.
This Wednesday, besides the aforementioned Iturrizaga-Bruzón, there is going to be another interesting match such as Mitkov vs Lelys , while it might be much less complicated the clash between Zapata and the host Jonathan Subervi, who has a lower ELO.
