There is some serious fun going on at Blossom Hill Elementary School, where chess is king in the afternoons. After school, students best each other with a game of chess long after their peers have already gone home for the day.
Each week, parent Jon Frankle holds practice sessions to show students how to play the game he’s loved since he was young. Since 2000, he’s been teaching and pointing out missed opportunities to the students at Blossom Hill.
“I don’t have much time to play myself, but it started with my own kids, to offer this for them,” Frankle said. “I like to be part of the school community. I enjoy challenging the kids and teaching.”
His goal is to make his pupils think more about how they play. His trademark is the puzzle sheets he encourages students to do, that ask them to mark moves that can win or lose games. While they tend to think of them as homework, Frankle said, he maintains it’s for their good.
“That’s what we’re trying to do, to make you look at your own games,” he said.
