SPICE (Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence) was established in 2007. It is the only established university chess institute in the United States and possibly in the world. The goal of SPICE is to work with our friends and colleagues to enhance chess, education, technology, and research, etc.
Why should a student / chess player come to Texas Tech?
Here are just a few of the many benefits:
1. To receive top notch education.
2. To receive world class intense chess training
3. To have the opportunity to compete in multiple major SPICE chess tournaments (SPICE Cup, SPICE Spring Invitational, Get Smart! Play Chess!, Lubbock Open, and many more) every year.
In only its second year competing in College Chess Division I, Texas Tech won the College Chess Final Four (April 2011), the most prestigious college event. The team is expected to be ranked #1 in the country in August 2011.
SPICE is a premier center for chess education, research, technology, and outreach.
The goal of SPICE is to:
– Recruit outstanding undergraduate and graduate students to TTU and TTU-HSC
– Provide a substantial amount of scholarships to chess players
– Be a world leader in promoting women’s chess and chess in the schools
– Promote chess as vehicle for enriching the education of children
– Support the nation’s most elite chess program
– Serve as a center for chess education and research
– Support and promote competitive chess at the college level
In 6 months (June – December 2010), three Texas Tech Knight Raiders earned the GM title (Davorin Kuljasevic, Gergely Antal, and Gabor Papp)!
Texas Tech is majority male…very unusual for strong universities. Top schools in the U.S. are typically more like 60-40 female-male.

No other school can match SPICE and Texas Tech. And you accomplished this in just a few years. Congratulations!
Can you please give me some advice on how to run a successful chess program?
You’ve done great work, Susan. It’s no small feat to build a program like you have. Your efforts will benefit and change the lives of many people. Bravo, Susan – 21 times (like the 21 gun salute)
Just be careful to always watch your back there. Remember Mike Leach – if you’re too successful they might gun you down, particularly if they think they can save a million bucks.
Congratulations to the Knight Raiders and Texas Tech. You now have the best program by a mile.
