The Chess Federations of Azerbaijan and Cuba have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation.
The press service of the Baku Chess Olympiad reports that opening remarks at the signing ceremony were made by the Vice President of the Cuban Chess Federation, Mr. Carlos Rivera Gonzales.
He said that the MoU would contribute to the development of chess in both countries. “First of all, let me greet everyone. I feel very proud to sign the Memorandum. We are now visiting a beautiful city and a high-profile competition. I would like to express my gratitude on behalf of the Cuban Chess Federation. We are very interested in this cooperation, as it will contribute to the development of chess in our countries. I am proud to say that Azerbaijani chess players will participate in the next Capablanca Memorial. The Cuban Federation will cover all associated expenses,” he said.
The Vice President of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation and Director of the Baku Chess Olympiad Operating Committee, Mr. Mahir Mammedov, said the Memorandum would facilitate the development of chess in Azerbaijan. “Let me welcome the Cuban side. We have already had a meeting, which followed correspondence between our representatives. In the end, we decided to sign a Memorandum of Understanding, which will lay the groundwork for future cooperation. Cuba is one of the most popular and prominent countries in terms of chess. It is the home country of third world champion Jose Raul Capablanca. Our players have participated in tournaments in Cuba before. I look forward to this tradition being continued. The Cuban chess school is quite well-known, so we are honored to be able to cooperate with the Chess Federation of Cuba,” he said.
Then the signing ceremony was held. The Memorandum was signed by Mahir Mammedov on behalf of the Azerbaijani side and by Carlos Rivera Gonzales for the Cuban Chess Federation. Then a picture was taken.
