Today is the first round at the Tal Memorial Super Tournament in Moscow. Magnus Carlsen is the lowest rated player at 2698. The highest rated one is Svidler at 2750.
I knew Tal personally and I played him a number of times. He was an absolute gentleman and he was always very kind to me. I had wonderful memories of this incredible Latvian World Champion. I even wrote a section about Tal in my best-selling book “Breaking Through“.
Here are the results from today’s round at the Tal Memorial:
Svidler 1/2 Leko
Aronian 1-0 Morozevich
Carlsen 0-1 Gelfand
Shirov 1/2 Mamedyarov
Ponomariov 1-0 Grischuk

It will be interesting to see how Magnus will fare against 9 players over 2700. If anything, he will gain a lot of vital experience.
Here is supposed to be the LIVE game site and here is the event website. However, they are sometimes slow.
It’s about time for Aronian to show some great results once more.
Hi Susan!
Great game played by Gelfand today!
I think that Magnus is a little bit tired after “Cap d’Adge”.
Best wishes from Israel!
at least carlsen’s games are exciting- unfrotunately i don’t see him getting more than 3 or 4 pts in this trnmt- i thought today was one of his best chances of winning, especially since he had the white pieces – aronian looked really good as well- it figures my two favs (carlsen and moro) are off to a slow start
and carlsen has black against moro tomorrow which is bad because not only is moro going to be looking for a win in this tourney but he will also be out to avenge the 2 losses to carlsen at biel this year
I hope to see a pile of games worthy of Tal’s spirit. Questionable sacrifices and all.
After all, a sac doesn’t NEED to be sound if the opponent cannot find the safe path through the minefield at the board with the clock ticking.
As long as his name is spoken, he still lives.
Go Magnus! Susan, can you analize wonderboy games in this tournament?
Gracias!
Off topic, but St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow has to be one of the most picturesque buildings on the planet.
Reminder: I read Judit Polgar, and other popular Grandmaters, will be playing a Tal Memorial Blitz tournement after the Classical is finished.
It amazes me how underestimated Boris Gelfand is. He is not a super-GM by chance. I don’t think Carlsens chance to beat Gelfand was higher than winning against any other of his opponents he faces with white.
