I must be missing something, because I don’t understand how Qc7 seals the deal. b7 isn’t mate, since black would just capture with Qb7 in return and the best white can do then is trade rook for queen and face the black rook with nothing but pawns. For that matter, wouldn’t black respond to Qc7 with Qc6? What am I missing?
@ Brn: you’re right. It’s the endgame that follows after QxQ, bxQ, Rxg7. The white K can block the c-pawn, the white R stays on the 7th rank blocking the black K to help his free pawn, and the white K-side pawn will march on to promotion. (my evaluation)
Spoiler:
Qc7! seals the deal.
Qc7!
Qc7+ threatening mate at b7. If Black rook takes White queen, Wilte rook mates on the back rank.
