Report by Chessdom.com
The match between two chess legends, 10th World Champion Boris Spassky and “eternal challenger” Viktor Korchnoi, will be a final event in the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the union between Kalmykia and Russia.
Eight games will be played in Elista from 17th until 27th December, for a prize fund of 20.000 USD. On the rest day veteran players from Kalmykia, Moscow and St. Petersburg will compete in a blitz tournament.
“We hope that the match of the two giants, the real gift for chess lovers in Kalmykia, will be a wonderful conclusion of the jubilee year of the republic” – a member of the organizing committee said for Interfax agency (via e3e5.com).
This will be a great match.
This will be the first time and the last Spassky beats me at chess in his life! Ja!
I am rooting for Spassky!
Awesome!
it will be an excellent match !!!
no suprise Korchnoi still going strong, but a suprise Spassky to keen to play a Match after been very inactive for so long. So its great news, both players are big legends of the game
Spassky has been inactive for so long, and Korchnoi has stayed strong. I greatly respect Spassky the player and the man, but this match will be one sided.
Only $20,000 for the prize fund?
The amount should be 10 times as much for a former World Champion and two-time World Championship Challenger (not counting 1974).
