4th Pakistan National Women Chess Championship
Zenobia Wasif , the defending National Woman Champion has won the 4th National Women Chess Championship held at Faisal Town, Lahore. The last day of the championship proved to be very lucky for the defending Champion as she barely escaped twice against well prepared young talent Maryam Nasir and Nameeqa. Both had winning positions against her but lost their games by making blunders due to time pressure. Also in 5th round, Zenobia was a piece down against Urooj Saeed from Lahore when Urooj made a tactical blunder and threw away her hopes for the championship. In the final standings Zenobia was 1st with 6.5 points, Urooj Saeed was runner up with 6, Ghazala at 3rd position with 5.5. Maryam and Nameeqa scored 5 points each and got fourth and fifth positions respectively. The championship started from 28th March at Lahore. 24 selected woman players participated in the championship on the basis of top 6 from each province.
These top five players have earned the right to represent the Pakistan women Chess team in 41st World Chess Olympiads being held at Tromso, Norway in August 2014. The Chess Federation of Pakistan have scheduled an extensive training program for the selected woman Chess players starting from next month. A veteran Olympian of Malta Chess Olympiads 1980 is engaged in the training program on full time basis.
For their male counterparts, the 29th National Chess Championship shall take place from 25th April to 30th April at Faletti,s Hotel, Lahore.
