Any knight move fails to 1…Qxc1+ with an x-ray. Even the best knight move, 1.Ne2? loses to 1…Qxc1+ 2.Qxc1 Bxc1 3.Nxc1 Nxe4, when black has won a pawn with a gain of tempo (the threat is 4…Nxf2+). Then White can get a draw (after 1…Bxc1) with 2.Qxc1 when White can easily hold the position.
after 1.Nd1!! black has no sufficient defense as pointed out by kbyrnes:
1… qxc1?? 2.qd8+ with mate within two moves
1… qb8? looks tricky but 2.qxf4! qxf4? 3.rc8+ with mate next move …
1… bxd2 2.rxc7 bb4 3.rc8+ bf8 4.f3 +-
(stupid as i am i did not recognize that white is an exchange up in the starting position – maybe it’s too hot for me to calculate – 37.8 degrees centigrade outside – in here i suppose some degrees MORE … no air condition – no ice machine – no beer … oh my dear god – please help me – send me a thunder storm :-))
After 1.Nd1, Black might try 1…Nd5?!, when White might experience traumatic confusion in the heat if his ac is out and he’s been into the beer, but simply 2.RxQc7 should do the trick.
1…g5 stops all the mating stuff, and made me think, for some reason, of Leonid Stein, but again, just doesn’t work, failing to 2.Rxc7 and 3.Rxa7. These are nice and fun problems!

Ooops. I forgot to mention that 1.Qc2 is the best move. Sorry!
Nd1 blocks check
and thus White maintains the exchange up and wins. Of course not 1…Qxc1 2.Qd8+
If Nd1 really is the correct answer ( and I can’t find any refutation) , it is really a very cute puzzle. Kudos !
1. Nd1 Qxc1 2. Qxc1 Bxc1 and Black has won a rook and is up a piece.
Except 2. Qc8 followed by mate looks pretty good for White 🙂

🙂
