I think the weak square is f2 which is under attack by the Q. Bringing to bear another piece on this square would seem like the right answer. Rxc3 does this indirectly as the a pawn can not afford to uncover f2 by re-taking. If RxR then …Rf3 with check pressures f2 again.
Whenever you put a new chess problem, can you also put the FEN position, so we can easily copy/paste and then move pieces on board to try to understand the solutions presented here.
i would say moving the black pawn up one space might do the trick. It seems foolhardy to trade a castle which is worth 5 points for a pawn which is worth 1 point. Since this guy was champion I bet he did not take any chances.
if 2. Nd4 Rxa1 3. bxc3 exd4 4. Qxd4 Rxe1+ 5. Kxe1 Qa1+ 6. Ke2 Qb2+ 7. Kf1 Bd2 and the queen and bishop coordinate to win the game.
if 2. Rxa2 Rf3+ 3. Kg2 Qf2+ 4. Kh1 Qxe1+ and wherever the king goes Rf2 is checkmate.
if 2. Rxa2 Rf3+ 3. Ke2 Rf2+! 4. Kd1 Qxa2 5. Qd3 Rxb2 with no good way to protect the knight.
if 4. Kd3 Qxa2 5. Qxb5 Qxb2 6. Kc4 Rf3 and white gets to keep the knight because Rc3+ will drive the king away.
However it is very easy for black to go wrong here and white has miraculous defensive moves:
if 3. Ke2 Qf2+? 4. Kd1 Rxb3!? (5.Qxb3 Qf2#) 5. Re2! Qf1+ 6. Kc2! (6. Re1?? Rd3+ winning the queen and maintaining the attack)Qxe2+? 7. Kxb3 and black’s attack is over
Instead: 6… Rb4! 7. Kc3 Rc4+ 8. Kb3 Qf3+ still wins for black.
if 3. Ke2 Qe3+? 4. Kd1! and even though black has heavy pieces so close the king white is actually ahead because the best black has is 4… Qxb3+ 5. Qxb3 Rxb3 and white has two rooks/5 pawns vs. black’s rook and bishop/6pawns.
I found a lot more stuff in this position but now i’m tired and want to do something else, so, bye bye!
main line: 1. Rxc3 Rxa2 2. Rf3+ Ke2 3. Rf2+ (took me a lot of time to find this move) Kd1 4. Qxa2 (with mate threats) Qd3 (only move) 5. Rxb2 (the rest is simple)
White culd try Kd3 in move 3 but then: 3. … Kd3 4. Qxa2 (again there are many lines but are basicaly the same) Qxb5 5. Qxb2 Kc4 6. Rc2+! Kd5 7. Rc5+ (and game over)
It is surprising that finding the first move was easy but then finding Rf2+ wasn’t (I don’t know why but I just kept trying to introduce the queen and do something but there just isn’t anything …)
yes imfishre, no just joking, altghough i wouldnt mindhaving more of his talent without his bizarre behavioiur, he lives in Reykavik now, but travels a lot.
Rxc3
Rxc3-pxc3, Qf2++ ?

This one was too easy – didn’t take 10 secs to find Rxc3!
Dear Susan,
Whenever you put a new chess problem, can you also put the FEN position, so we can easily copy/paste and then move pieces on board to try to understand the solutions presented here.
Thanks!

1…rxc3! of course, but this move is only half the truth.
2.rxa2 rf3+
3.ke2 … but what now?
3…qf2+?
4.kd1 with only a small edge for black
3….qe3+?
4.kd1 is just the same
remains
3…rf2+
a)
4.kd1 qxa2
5.qd3 rxb2! -+ e.g. 6.nc1 rd2+, 7.qxd2 qxd2#
b)
4.kd3 qc7! (threatening mate, but i suppose 4…qxa2 should also work)
5.ra8+ kh7
6.re2 rf3+
7.re3 rxe3+
8.kc2 rxb3+ -+
greetings, Vohaul
Rxc3! wins at least pawn,threat Rf3+
After p*c3, Qf2 mate
After R*a2, Rf3+ and mate
The position isn’t so simple!
1… Rxc3
if 2. bxc3 Qf2#
However it gets more complex:
if 2. Nd4 Rxa1 3. bxc3 exd4 4. Qxd4 Rxe1+ 5. Kxe1 Qa1+ 6. Ke2 Qb2+ 7. Kf1 Bd2 and the queen and bishop coordinate to win the game.
if 2. Rxa2 Rf3+ 3. Kg2 Qf2+ 4. Kh1 Qxe1+ and wherever the king goes Rf2 is checkmate.
if 2. Rxa2 Rf3+ 3. Ke2 Rf2+! 4. Kd1 Qxa2 5. Qd3 Rxb2 with no good way to protect the knight.
if 4. Kd3 Qxa2 5. Qxb5 Qxb2 6. Kc4 Rf3 and white gets to keep the knight because Rc3+ will drive the king away.
However it is very easy for black to go wrong here and white has miraculous defensive moves:
if 3. Ke2 Qf2+? 4. Kd1 Rxb3!? (5.Qxb3 Qf2#) 5. Re2! Qf1+ 6. Kc2! (6. Re1?? Rd3+ winning the queen and maintaining the attack)Qxe2+? 7. Kxb3 and black’s attack is over

1. Rxc3 bxc3 is imposible because of
2. Qf2#
so:
1. Rxc3 Rxa2
2. Rf3+ Ke2 (only move)
if Kg2 then 3. Qf2+ Kh1
4. Qxe1+ kg2
5. Rf2#
main line:
1. Rxc3 Rxa2
2. Rf3+ Ke2
3. Rf2+ (took me a lot of time to find this move) Kd1
4. Qxa2 (with mate threats) Qd3 (only move)
5. Rxb2 (the rest is simple)
White culd try Kd3 in move 3 but then:
3. … Kd3
4. Qxa2 (again there are many lines but are basicaly the same) Qxb5
5. Qxb2 Kc4
6. Rc2+! Kd5
7. Rc5+ (and game over)
It is surprising that finding the first move was easy but then finding Rf2+ wasn’t (I don’t know why but I just kept trying to introduce the queen and do something but there just isn’t anything …)
D.K.
1. .. Rxc3 {Going for the mate with Qf2 in the next move if white plays bxc3}
2. Nd4 {To block the black queen and to not to allow Rf3+}
2. .. Rxa1 {Making way for the black queen to attack from a1}
3. bxc3 {To compensate the rook just taken by black}
3. .. Bd2 {To force the rook exchange}
4. Rxa1 {Forced} Qxa1 {as planned}
5. Kg2 {To avoid successive check}
5. .. exd4 {White is now a piece down with a very vulnerable king}
White would be checkmated in the next 20 moves or less.
