School treasures chess
Club at Providencia Elementary shows students the basics and many intricacies of the classic game.

Every Wednesday after school for the next six weeks, a group of fourth- and fifth-graders at Providencia Elementary School will make child’s play out of chess.
Youth chess director Kevin Bulone will provide weekly lessons on the board game to a group of 20 students who excelled in math skills on their state standardized tests.
The school formed a chess club this semester to accommodate the activity after school and to foster critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, said Jennifer Culbertson, curriculum specialist at the school.
“We thought this would just be a neat way,” Culbertson said.
