NEWLY established Solomon Islands Chess Federation’s (SICF) promotional plan was boosted with a $150,000 sponsorship.
Phoenix International Managing Director Kelvyn Alp provided and handed over the money to SCF executive at the Mendana Hotel in Honiara last Friday.
He told chess executive members that his company is willingly to be associated with the sport in the country and hopes to provide further assistance in the future.
In recognition of this kind gesture, SICF executive met last Sunday (23 March) and agreed to name one of their upcoming events after Phoenix International Limited.
“We are naming the Easter tournament – The Phoenix International Chess Tournament.
“It is in recognition of the company’s willingness to support the sport,” the federation said in a statement.
The Easter tournament should bring together chess players from around the country to compete under FIDA rules.
Thanking Phoenix International for the timely assistance, SICF Treasurer Agie Defe said the financial assistance would certainly boost this new sport.
“The funding will help us promote chess throughout the country, starting with schools in Honiara,” she said.
SICF President Kim Soo Poh added the funding is unbelievable.
“It is tremendous and beneficial in our efforts to promote the new sport,” he said.
The executive is inviting interested players to involve in the sport, which was being played every Sunday afternoon at the Café Totilas.
The federation added that followers of the sport can read updates of events and organised tournaments in the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands’ (NOCSI) website.
The federation will soon have an electronic page dedicated to the sport soon.
