In the actual game Gopal sacrificed his Q with Qc1!! Taking was forced….Qxc1. So here goes;
Qc1 Qxc1 (…Qh7, Rxf8+ Qg8, Qh6#)
Rxf8+ Kh7
Rxf7+ Kh8 (… Kh6, Ng8#)
Nxg6+ Kg8
Rg7#
So is 1, Nf5 also winning ? I’m not sure. Have to take another look. Great combo by Gopal!!
1.Nf5 gxf5 is probably losing for white since white cannot play 2.Qxf7 on the next move without leaving the f4 square unguarded which will give black a quick mate of his own. Thus black will consolidate his defense with Kg8 at some point and be up a piece. White may still have drawing chances due to the nature of black’s extra knight, so I can say for certain it is totally lost.
That should have been- “can’t say for certain”.

Yes, 1.Qc1 is stunning in its beauty.
For those advocates of 1.Qb8, I will point out that white must exercise some care after black plays 1. ….Kh7- an immediate capture of the knight on move 2 will likely allow black to escape a loss.
White will play Qd6 after gxf5
If you are talking about
1. Nf5 gf5
2. Qd6
then 2. …..Kg8 and black is ok as far as I can tell. Black will not find it easy it win from that point, but probably won’t lose either.
