From Awonder’s Dad:
For the US record on this, GM Samuel Sevian became an IM when he was 12 years, 10 months and 16 days old. Sevian was born on December 26, 2000. He gained his IM title by crossing the 2400 FIDE rating threshold after he played in the “First Saturday GM Nov. 2013” Tournament (Nov. 2-12, 2013) in Budapest, Hungary, coupled with the three IM norms he obtained earlier.Â
Awonder was born on April 9, 2003. He crossed FIDE 2400 on June 14, 2015 when the 12 years old Awonder won the US Junior Open U21 (June 12-14, 2015) by the score of 6-0 in Schaumburg, Illinois. He has now earned his third and last IM norm at the Dallas Fall FIDE tournament (Nov. 20-25, 2015) in Dallas, Texas. Awonder was 12 years, 7 months and 16 days old at as of today (November 25, 2015).Â
Therefore, Awonder has broken Samuel Sevian’s record by three months to become the youngest ever chess international master (IM) in the United States of America.Â

Susan has her eyes on Awonder Liang, another promising talent from the Philippines now representing the US. Hope she doesn’t be disappointed again like what happened when Wesley So left the coop.
