Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Go Ray!
and go Alex!
Does anybody know how many points Ray Robson needs in order to get his final GM norm in this tournament? Did he get it already in a previous competition?
Arbolario, if you grasp a bit of Spanish, please read a lovely note on Robson in

Dear Susan. I know that Ray Robson made his final “GM norm” at the last tourney he played. However the competition he faced was less than GM strength (only facing one GM). Most of us believe he is GM strength…but to silence the critics of his last result( me being one of them). Has he achieved a GM norm in this the world junior championship?
Robert,
There is no need to silence the critics. The critics are free to get the GM titles themselves if they think it is easy. He made his last GM norm according to FIDE rules fair and square. He had no knowledge who would show up at the FIDE event in Uruguay. If no one shows up at the World Cup and a 2500 GM wins it, should he give the title back? Of course not.
Ray’s new rating is getting close to 2600 FIDE. His performance after 9 and 10 rounds are both over 2600. That means that he could have a 9 or 10 round GM norm if he wasn’t a GM. He also performed at around 2600 or higher in his last 5 events. There are many players who got the GM title with just one norm or never had their ratings over 2500. There are also players who got GM norms without playing 3 GMs. As long as they comply with FIDE rules, we have to accept it, whether we like it or not.
Best wishes,
Susan
Thanks for responding Susan to my question.
Beating Howell was a fine result … Howell trained by Nigel Short after all, next question is, who is Ray’s trainer?
Ray’s trainer is GM Alexander Onischuk.
