Anatoly Karpov has announced that he will stand for the FIDE Presidency in a move that could radically change the governance of the game which has been in a parlous state for many years.

Elections will take place during the FIDE Congress at the 39th Chess Olympiad to be staged in the Siberian city of Khanty-Mansiysk from September 19th – October 4th 2010.
Karpov has been nominated by the French Chess Federation but the regulations stipulate that a candidate must be nominated by his own federation which means both he and Ilyumzhinov need the Russian nomination. This rule can be waived in ‘exceptional cases’. Karpov rather caustically implied that if he was nominated Ilyumzhinov would probably run anyhow “FIDE can do whatever they want, they don’t respect their own regulations and rules.” a sentiment that is backed up by years of bitter experience.

Does Karpov have a chance?
I sure hope so – the current president is a crook, and Topalov’s manager is about as bad! I think Karpov could hardly do worse, and as an ex-world champ could bring much-needed experience to world chess management.
Danailov is not running for FIDE president, you dummy.
