Cuban Chess GM Bruzon Leads in la Laguna Tournament

HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 10 (acn) Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzon accumulates 6 points in seven days to be in the first position of the La Laguna chess tournament underway in Tenerife, Spain.
Bruzon, with 2,641 ELO points, beat playing with white pieces Bosnian Bojan Kurajica (2,525) to draw level with the Brazilian IM Krikor Mekhitarian (2,490) but the Cuban leads due to the tie-off rules of the event.
Mekhitarian defeated Italian IM Stefano Tatai (2,356) and is followed by eight players with identical accumulates of 5.5 points, including Cubans Holden Hernandez (2,541) and Yuri Gonzalez (2,512) who occupy the 7th and 8th positions, respectively.
According to the event’s website, Gonzalez drew his match against Polish GM Kamil Miton, fifth, while Yuri beat Ukrainian Ruslan Pogorelov (2,486) who has 4.5 points.
On Saturday Bruzon will face Mekhitarian and Holden and Yuri will play each other.

IM Mekhitarian achieved his second GM norm by drawing with Bruzon on round 8.
He will be the 10th Brazilian GM when he completes the three GM norms.
