Bulgarian President Purvanov meets Russian chess grandmaster Karpov

Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov met legendary Russian chess grandmaster Anatoly Karpov who is in the country on an official invitation from the Bulgarian Chess Federation (BCF) during the match between Vesselin Topalov and India’s Viswanathan Anand, a media statement announced on May 3 2010.
Karpov met the deputy president of the BCF, Silvio Danailov, who is Topalov’s agent.
“Bulgaria has proven that it can successfully organise major chess tournaments,” Purvanov said during the meeting with the Russian. “We are interested in the game’s future because Bulgaria is one of the most successful countries in the game,” Purvanov added.
The president also said that the country will support the application of Danailov to become the head of the European chess federation.
Karpov himself said that the organisation of the Topalov – Anand match was at a very high level.
