Best College Athlete St. Louis 2014 – Wesley So
If you see Webster University junior Wesley So around town, make sure to address him by his official title: Grandmaster Wesley So. OK, don’t do that, but the kid is a chess prodigy. (And, yes, chess is a sport. It’s officially recognized as such by the International Olympic Committee, you haters.)
So learned to play from his dad when he was just seven years old — an age many of us are still learning to “tie” our Velcro shoes. By the age of ten he was competing in international chess tournaments, and at fourteen he attained the highest title in his sport — grandmaster — making him the eighth youngest in the world to achieve such status.
Now the twenty-year-old is ranked No. 14 worldwide and is a member of the top collegiate chess team in the country at Webster University. He has also won multiple national and international titles, such as the 2013 World University Championship and the 2014 National Open Blitz Championship. Oh, and he gives lessons, too. That’s — wait for it — So cool.

Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Not on par with GM Nakamura. This baby needs to learn more to at least be rank behind the great master Naka. And it will take a lot of sleeping and eating so his toddler brain develops.
And Nakamura is the best athlete in the US perhaps in the world. Go tell your mama that.
This boy only played in a non rated fide tournament that why he is best only in a small city of St Louis while the great Nakamura played all over the world beating all the best elite players.
This is terrible. They should give it to Nakamura, who actually doesn’t live in St Louis. But Nakamura should receive all awards.
Folks, it’s best COLLEGE athlete. Naka is not in college.
Thank You Thank You Thank You my adoring followers.
I promised making a huge comeback after a disappointing finish at Sinquefeld Cup.
I agree with you all that I am the greatest athlete in the world.
I will let Wesley So take over my spot after I retire.
GM Nakamura is OVERRATED… Proclaims to be the best & heir apparent to Carlsen but CANNOT even beat him a single game.. Nakamura also is a whiner, always blames everything whenever he lose and/or underperform… Never runs out of excuse… He let his mouth do the talking instead of his play… He has a chess IQ of Johny Bravo lol And guess what, before the year ends, Nakamura will be out of the top 10. Nakamura the BEST WHINER & MR EXCUSE AWARD… He should go home to Japan & do a harakiri
Better than Caruana??? Who just wiped out all the elite players in Sinquefield Cup which I believe wad held in St Louis. Headline is mis leading and who ever wrote it must be exiled to the north pole.
Nakamura should be the best athlete. He’s a great sumo wrestler. Yokozuna Hikaru!
Nakamura beating Carlsen…..first he has to win a game against Topalov before aiming at Magnus. Naka, please don’t bite more than what you can chew.
