To Jan: We found almost the same two solutions, but small differences:
A) 4. Rxg8+ Bf8? The bishop was gone, you must mean Rf8.
B) You wrote: 4. Rxf8+ Rxf8 5. Qe7# I wrote: 4. Qe6+ Re7 5. Qxe7# Both seem correct to me (in my line black king is stopped by black bishop, in your line by rook). Is it right?
When I post now, I get the random text “puremove”, nice 🙂
Dear friends, I thoughtfajac used microsoft word and pasted the contents here.I tried but could not succeed. Then I thought it must be html tag, failed twice but used google search to find proper usage.
pht, you are right. i usually do this without a board, which sometimes leads to mistakes like this. there were several ways to mate in this case. good, that it seems we found the shortest ones this time! let´s do it again next time. greets, jan
How is the desperate Rh8 check hard to find?
Rh8+ will lead to all sorts of fun stuff. 🙂
1Rh8+ 2Rh8 3Qh6 mate
1. Rh8+ Bxh8
2. Rxh8+ Ng8 (Kg7, 3. Qh6#)
3. Qxd6+ Ke8 (Kg7, 4. Qh6#; Re7, 4. Qxe7#)
4. Rxg8+ Bf8
5. Rxf8#
1. … Ng8
2. Qxd6+ Ke8 (Re7, 3. Qxe7#)
3. Rxg8+ Bf8 (Rf8, 4. Qe7#)
4. Rxf8+ Rxf8
5. Qe7#
greets, jan
I see two variations here:
A)
1. Rh8+ Bxh8
2. Rxh8+ Ng8 (Kg7 Qh6#)
3. Qxd6+ Ke8 (Re7 Qxe7#)
4. Rxg8+ Rf8
5. Rxf8#/Qe7#
B)
1. Rh8+ Ng8
2. Qxd6+ Ke8 (Re7 Qxe7#)
3. Rxg8+ Bf8 (Rf8 Qe7#)
4. Qe6+ Re7
5. Qxe7#
1. Rh8+ Bxh8
2. Rxh8+ Ng8
3. Qh6+ Rg7 (3. .. Ke8 4.Rxg8+ Kd7 (4. .. Rf8 5. Qe6#) 5. Qe6+ Kc7 6. Qxf7#)
4. Qxd6+ Kf7 (4. .. Ke8 5. Rxg8+ Rxg8 (5. .. Kf7 6. Qe6#) 6. Qe7#)
(4. .. Re7 5. Qxe7#)
5. Qe6+ Kf8
6. Rxg8+ Rxg8
7. Qe7#
1. Rh8+,Bxh8 2. RXh8+, Ng8 (Kg7 loses immediately to Qh6#) 3. QXd6+, Ke8 (Re7 loses to QXe7#) 4. RXg8+, Rf8 5. RXf8+
Since Black threatens mate on b2, White must mate himself, and give checks with every move:
1. Rh8+ Bxh8
1. … Ng8
2. Qxd6+ Ke8 (Re7 3.Qxe7#)
3. Rxg8+ Bf8 (Rf8 4.Qxe7#)
4. Rxf8+ Rxf8
5. Qxe7#
2. Rxh8+ Ng8
2. … Kg7
3. Qh6#
3. Qh6+!
3. Qxd6+ would give the black king the square g7, and now h6 is guarded by the black knight.
3. … Rg7
3. … Ke8
4. Rxg8+ Kd7 (Rf8 5. Qe6#)
5. Qe6+ Kc7
6. Qxf7#
4. Qxd6+ Ke8
4. … Kf7 (Re7 5.Qxe7#)
5. Qe6+ Kf8
6. Rxg8+ Rxg8
7. Qxe7#;
5. Qe6+ Kf8
6. Rxg8+ Rxg8
7. Qxe7#
It’s Rh8+
There are two main lines:
1a .. Ng8 and 1b .. Bxh8
2a. Qxd6+ .. Ke8 (Re7 3.Qxe7#)
3a. Rxg8+ and mate in two moves.
2b. Rxh8+ .. Ng8
3b. Qh6+ .. Ke8 (3c .. Rg7)
4b. Rxg8+ with easy mate patterns…
4c. Qxe6+ .. Ke8 (Re7 5.Qxe7#)
5c. Rxg8+
1Rh8+ Bxh8
2Rxh8+ Ng8 (2.. Kg7 3Qh6#]
3Qh6+ in order to block g7
3….. Rg7
4Qxd6+ Kf7 [or (a)]
5Qe6+ Kf8
6Rxg8+ Rxg8
7Qe7#
(a)3…. Ke8
4Rxg8+ Rxg8
5Qe7#
Even 1… Ng8 does not help.
Rh8 Bh8 Rh8 Kg7 Qh6 mate?

Both seem correct to me (in my line black king is stopped by black bishop, in your line by rook).
Is it right?
