Posted on August 1, 2012 by William in All Articles w/ Videos, Blitz/Bullet Chess, Strategy & Game Review
The match situation before game 3 was extremely tense as Game 1 had been drawn and I had won game 2 in a complicated tactical struggle. GM Henley changed his strategy and opened with 1. e4, to which I responded with 1. c5 and intended to play a Sicilian Defense. However Ron played the 2. c3 Anti-Sicilian, so I decided to transpose into a French Defense with 2. …e6 3. d4 d5. I was trying […]

Posted on July 30, 2012 by William in All Articles w/ Videos, Strategy & Game Review, Tournament Updates
Round 3 GM Bologan – GM Carlsen make-up game. Bologan’s having a rough tournament, having lost 3 straight after taking over from Morozevich (who lost 2 and was hospitalized) while Carlsen has had 1 win and 4 draws. The line they played is a variation in the Sicilian Rossolimo and it seems like Bologan is still playing poorly as he quickly allowed Carlsen to equalize and soon gave him the initiative. While GM’s may disagree […]

Posted on July 29, 2012 by William in All Articles w/ Videos, Blitz/Bullet Chess, Strategy & Game Review
Kosteniuk opens with the Nimzo-Indian and quickly achieves pressure against white’s center. Wang Hao consolidates his position and pushes forward to take the initiative and attack in the center and on the kingside. Kosteniuk’s has strong counterplay on the queenside and especially with her B+Q battery on the h1-a8 diagonal, however it seems that white’s position is preferable due to the long-term attacking chances against black’s lonely king. Apparently low on time after a complicated […]

I could not get any IM or GM norms at the Las Vegas Chess Festival because it was only 6 rounds instead of 9.
That sucks. FIDE should change this rule.
