THE Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ)’s men’s team at the weekend left for Istanbul, Turkey for the 2012 40th edition of the World Chess Olympiad championships that starts today and ends on September 10.
CFZ president Lewis Ncube said in Lusaka yesterday that the men’s team led by Aaron Banda as captain left on Saturday night while the women’s team was expected to follow later.
Ncube said the Zambian team that is likely to settle for fourth seeded among the African representatives stood a good chance of reaping medals at the two week-long championships that has attracted participation from across the world.
“We can beat South Africa easily if we play well and to our potential, the only African team that can give us problems is Egypt for the men’s team. But we the players are ready. As for the women, South Africa is stronger than us,” said Ncube.
The team comprises International Master (IM) Daniel Jere, Stanley Chumfwa, Gillian Bwalya, Andrew Kayonde and Nase Lungu make up the men’s squad while the women team comprises Epah Tembo, Joy Mtine, Constance Mbatha, Lorita Mwango and Linda Hamoonga.
