Nigel Short recently was knocked out by young David Baramidze in the rapid playoff at the World Cup. What is significant is his opponent was more than 24 minutes late in a 25 minute rapid playoff game and won! Short complained that the situation was difficult for him to handle.

A professional, former world championship qualifier should be able to handle his opponent’s time pressure. I lost a lot of respect for Nigel because of his implications that his opponent somehow did something wrong. His argument that you can’t show up late for other sports is ridiculous( check out chessbase.com). It was his opponents time, he can use it however and whereever he wants. C’mon, Nigel sounds like a whiner. disappointing because he is so talented.
