Chandler Monelli has lost track of how many after-school hours he’s spent playing chess with club members at Carlisle Christian Academy, where he is a high school junior.
But he’s not likely to forget bringing home the 2009 Pennsylvania State Scholastic Championship chess crown with a perfect 5-point score in the kindergarten-through -12th grade event held in Middlesex Township last weekend.
More than 800 chess players from 156 schools across the state competed in the five-round tournament organized by the Pennsylvania State Chess Federation and the U.S. Chess Federation.
Monelli, of Bendersville in Adams County, plays with Carlisle Christian in the Mason-Dixon League. The team from Carlisle Christian, formerly Bethel Christian Academy, also placed in the event.
