WIJK AAN ZEE, the Netherlands – GM Wesley So of the Philippines struggled long and hard before holding top seed GM Arkadij Naiditsch of Germany to a draw at the start of the 2010 Corus chess tournament at the De Moriaan Community Centre Sunday.
The draw came after a marathon 111 moves with the white-playing Naiditsch (ELO 2689) unable to shake off So (ELO 2656) in their tensely-fought encounter in the category16 Group B competition.
When the game was agreed drawn, the Latvian-born Naiditsch had a rook and one pawn against So’s bishop and one pawn.
The Filipino woodpusher, however, wisely held his ground during the longest-played match on opening day of the prestigious 13-round competition being held in this small seaside resort town.
