UAAP Jr. champs face GM Antonio in ‘1 vs 600’

MANILA, Philippines – Adamson University (AdU), the reigning UAAP Junior grand slam chess champion, will challenge Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. in the 1 vs. 600: Pinoy Ironman simultaneous chess in April.
Antonio will attempt to set a Guinness record by facing 600 chess opponents from April 10 to 11 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Vito Cruz, Manila.
Among those who will match him are the Baby Falcons under ADU head coach Christopher Rodriguez. The team is composed of Timothy So Kua, Ali Guya, Jessie Abucejo, Steven James Dacanay and Karen Enriquez.
“Full support ang Adamson chess team sa makasaysayang Guinness World Record sa larangan ng chess,” said Rodriguez.
Antonio, 12-time national open champion, is eyeing to break current Guinness simultaneous chess world record of Iran’s GM Morteza Mahjoob.
Mahjoob set a record by facing 500 opponents and scoring 397 wins, 90 draws, 13 losses in 2009.
Antonio is the 2009 blitz champ in the Asian Indoor Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, finishing with 8.5 points in 9 games.
The event is organized by Noli Cruz Touch of Gold Enterprises in cooperation with Philippine Games and Amusement Corp. (PAGCOR), Department of Tourism (DOT), Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA), Manila Sports Council (MASCO) Chairman Paul Edward Almario, City of Manila, Filway Marketings Inc. CEO Hector “Chito” Tagaysay, G4 chess club, Meralco Chess Club and Philippine Sports Commission.
