THE World Chess Federation (FIDE), led by president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov of Russia, will put up $1 million in prize fund for the staging of the 10-leg Florencio Campomanes Memorial Cup chess championships starting in Manila this August.
The event is a tribute to the Filipino chess icon who once served as FIDE president. Ilyumzhinov personally announced the event during the annual meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Chess Confederation hosted by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero Pichay Jr. at the Subic Bay Freeport late last week.
Ilyumzhinov said a total of 10 tournaments with cash prizes of $100,000 each will be held over the next 10 years in the 10 ASEAN member-nations to perpetuate the memory of Campomanes, who passed away last month at the age of 83.
The 10-leg tournament will formally kick off in Manila on Aug. 11-19 possibly at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
