What’s wrong with Karpov? He’s supposed to be one of the greatest.
Karpov can lose every game from now to eternity and he would still be considered top ten all-time.
Karpov is old. After ~forty a GM is past his peak.
I wonder whether Karpov is emerging from the opening phase with disadvantages, either small or large?
I doubt Karpov spends as much time studying the openings as do the younger players in this tournament.
Yea, that’s right. My mom used to tell me “Study openings so you don’t have to sweat like day-laborer in the end game and be late for dinner”
Karpov is a great player and a world champ. Study his games and you will know. He has not been playing his best lately.
Please understand Karpov is arguably one of the top 5 chess players of all time. He never got to demonstrate his greatness fully because Fischer was watching his assent and didn’t really care for the idea that Karpov had handled Spassky so convincingly. Karpov was ahead 5 games to 3 when his first match with Garry was called off. Karpov’s chess prowess had declined no doubt, but he could have done better in this tournament, but it’s obvious his energies are focused elsewhere. At 56 it’s hard to compete in any sport with the best players in the world, regardless of the sport. Michael Jordan would not do to well in the NBA at 44. Even if he could make a team.
