Wesley So escapes as biotech entrepreneur David Norwood misses a chance to be the rising star of US chess

World number eight Wesley So duly took top honours at the Bunratty Congress, but encountered serious resistance as early as the third round when he came up against GM David Norwood and was lucky to draw the game.

Norwood has long since cast off the mantle of professional chess player to become a biotech entrepreneur and still plays the same openings he did 30 years ago.

His chosen line of the Modern Defence was featured in a book on the opening by Raymond Keene and George Botterill published in 1972.

Your correspondent purchased his copy, I recall, with considerable excitement the following year, as publishing house BT Batsford had just begin to make opening theory accessible to British players.
