World chess champion Magnus Carlsen finally overcomes Arkady Naiditsch in a nervy play-off in Baden-Baden after losing to him in the third round

Magnus Carlsen needed an Armageddon game to overcome Arkady Naiditsch in a late-night play-off in the 3rd GRENKE Chess Classicafter they finished half a point ahead of Fabiano Caruana and Michael Adams.

There was some blunderful chess, as the first four Blitz games ended 2-2 with one win apiece and two draws.

In the Armageddon game, Carlsen opted to play white, with six minutes on the clock to his opponent’s five, but he was obliged to win.

Naiditsch only needed a draw, but was outplayed – a shame, as the German had delighted his home fans by defeating the world champion in the third round.
