There is certainly no time to take the bishop, since this lets black’s c-pawn queen.
But it does seem h3 pawn can be taken!
Therfore (and before black plays g5 and Bf5) I would start with:
1. Nf2!!
A)
1. … c4
2. Nxh3+! c3
3. Ng1! c2
4. Ne2! g5
5. Kg1 Bd3
6. Nc1
leads nowhere for black.
B)
1. … g5
2. Nxh3 (enforced before black plays Bf5)
I can’t see where this leads black either. Black should probably rush king.
C)
1. … Ke7
2. Kg1!
To take h3 can be delayed till black plays g5 first.
2. … Ke6
3. Kf1! Kd5
4. Ke1! Kd4
5. Kd2! g5 (what else now?)
6. Nxh3! g4 (what else now?)
7. Nf2! Bf5 (what else now?)
8. Nd1! Bc2
9. Nc3
I think here may be some finer neuances that I have missed, but I do hope that my basic idea in this game is correct.
Wilderness to start with.Logic and strategy and not checking many variations will help. Can white contain the activity of B as in many other problems? I do not think so.white seems to have Hobner’s choice at the first move.1.Kg1 will bring the K to stop the P from queening but loses the opportunity to grab the B.So the following points are to be thought of.
(1)Leave the task of stopping P from queening on N even at the cost of its life. Can black Q drive it away and queen the P?Think of black P at c2,white N at c1 and black K arriving at d2.N will move to b3 and K can not drive it away.If P is queened N lays its life.If this is so white K can attempt to go to g3 and block all hopes there.
(2)Can N come back to block black P after capturing B?.Now
1.Nf6+ Ke7 2.Nxh7 c4 3.Ng5 c3 4.Nf3 c2 5.Ng1 (this saves the day for white.5.c1=Q is stalemate.)Kd6 6.Ne2 Ke5 7.Kg1 Ke4 8.Kf2Mission seems to be successful.if black delays pushing c pawn also there is no harm.N’s task remains same irrespective of black P position at c3,c4 etc.
Nf6 wins Bishop. Thereafter Ng5 blocks the king side pawns.
Black has two choices.
(1) Try to attack with its King and drive away the the Knight to use the pawn majority.
(2) Try to advance the c pawn supported by King.
If (1), White can reduce pawn majority by Nxh3, and thereafter play Ng5 and h4. Then, the king has to work only with c pawn.
If (2), White King can stop the c pawn advance by reaching earlier.
There seems to be also a small whiff for White to advance its h pawn, stopping the c pawn with King and g pawn with Kight.
In my 4th line I wrote it as Can black Q drive it away?It should be black K instead of black Q.Sorru for the inconvenience.
pht,
I have not gone through your lines fully but got stuck up in between.
After 1.Nf2 c4 2.Nxh3 what if black plays 2…. g5 ?(pun:Question mark is not for g5 but for what if.)If you take g5 you won’t return in time.f4 is denied to N.If you attempt 3.Ng1 Be4+ is horrible.If 3.Kg2 c3 4.Ng1 Bd3.
S.G.BHAT
I had missed 5. Ng1! c1=Q stalemate.
Therefore I thought white could not take bishop.
